Facts on... Kamala Harris

 KAMALA HARRIS
49th Vice President of the United States

Born: October 20, 1964

Kamala Devi Harris was born in Oakland (California), to parents that emigrated from India and Jamaica. She graduated from Howard University and the University of California, Hastings College of Law. Harris was mainly raised by her mother, Shyamala Gopalan, a well-recognized scientist. Both of her parents were activists, which instilled Kamala with a strong sense of justice.

In 2014, she got married to Doug Emhoff, with whom she has two children. She started her career as a lawyer in the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office, where she prosecuted child sexual assault cases.

When she was elected California's Attorney General in 2010, she established the state’s first Bureau of Children’s Justice and introduced several social reforms that ensured greater transparency and accountability in the criminal justice system.

In 2017, Vice President Harris was sworn into the United States Senate. In her first speech, she spoke out on behalf of immigrants and refugees who were then under attack.

Throughout her career, she also worked on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and served on the Senate Judiciary Committee.

As senator, she introduced reforms on combatting hunger, providing rent relief, improving maternal health care, addressing the climate crisis...

On August 11, 2020, Vice President Harris accepted President Joe Biden’s invitation to become his running mate and help unite the nation.

And I will be honored to be serving with a fantastic vice president — Kamala Harris — who will make history as the first woman, first Black woman, first woman of South Asian descent, and first daughter of immigrants ever elected to national office in this country.” Joe Biden
